If promotion or climbing the greasy pole in your current job is something you have been mulling over, hopefully this should have some useful information that will be of help to you.
Of course advancing at work is ranked right up there on everyone's list of priorities. It comes with its own rewards which speak for itself, financial gain through more money, perhaps more chance to delegate tasks to others and therefore bearing less of the brunt on yourself. It's also important for your sense of self worth and happiness to feel like you are moving forwards and that your hard work and talent is being recognized and you are appreciated. In fact, it's ranked so high up the list that it jostles for one of the top places with priorities such as health and well being for some.
Ask yourself why you are even reading this, do you feel like you are unappreciated in your current job, or are you aching for new challenges and more responsibility? The answers to these questions are important, and it's also important to not be blinded by the extra money if you are offered a new position, maybe with the same company or perhaps with a new company.
There are a lot more factors to consider than a few extra shiny pounds each month. If the promotion is with a new company, think about the time you have put into the employer you're with at the moment, is there room for growth there? Even simple things are easy to overlook and can make a huge difference, for example what is the commute like? With rising costs, if it's a complicated journey on public transport, the rise in pay may be eaten up by travelling in every day. Also no one wants to spend a minute longer than necessary going to and from work.
Obviously, every individual has different reasons for wanting to change their current job that they are in, but especially in recession times, these decisions need to be thought over for longer than usual.
