Are you thinking about a pastry chef career? If so, you will want to prepare yourself so that you can be as successful as possible.

Read the following steps to know how to work yourself up to having the successful pastry chef career of your dreams.
Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

  1. 1
Take cooking & baking classes in high school -
Take whatever type of food related classes are offered in high school. Some of these may be regular high school classes, others may be AP classes.
  2. 2
Volunteer in the kitchen - whether it is in your school kitchen, a local soup kitchen or even a small catering business, volunteer to help out to get experience as to what working in a kitchen is like. You might not be doing creative jobs like you would imagine a pastry chef doing, but you will get a feel for the general hustle and bustle that goes on in an industrial kitchen.
  3. 3
Get summer jobs working in a kitchen - instead of working in an office or as a babysitter, try finding a job working in a kitchen. Same as step #2, this will give you real world experience.
  4. 4
Keep a running resume - keep track of every high school or college baking or pastry chef class you have taken. Also keep track of any type of volunteer or paid work you have done in the field. When trying to get a job as a beginner pastry chef, any type of experience can help, so make sure to keep track of everything. When it's time to get a job, you can perfect the resume to best display the experience you have.
  5. 5
Get a pastry chef degree or certification - You can get a certificate, an associates degree, or a bachelor's degree. Having a formal training and certificate or degree will give you the knowledge you need to succeed as a pastry chef.
  6. 6
Get a first job - your first real job as a pastry chef probably won't be glamorous - it will probably be doing tedious kitchen tasks and baking.
  7. 7
Keep getting better jobs - Once you have your first job, it will be easier to continue getting better jobs until you have the pastry chef career of your choice.
