According to the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses NACCB, IT employment reached an all-time high of 3,907,800 in June. Additionally, IT has grown by almost 90,000 jobs compared to the overall employment market that has lost 438,000 jobs. “In light of deteriorating conditions in the general employment market, I am heartened by the continued resilience of IT employment,” said Mark Roberts, NACCB’s chief executive officer, in a press release.

While workers are in demand to fill IT positions, the challenge employers are facing is finding qualified candidates.

In a released report by Robert Half Technology, 77% of the 1,400 chief information officers surveyed admitted “it has been equally or more challenging to find skilled candidates for IT jobs than it was last year.” What’s the cause? Shortage of qualified IT workers. 52% of CIOs cited the shortage as the primary cause behind finding workers to fill the open positions.

Thomas Sweetman, chief operations officer at Productive Data Solutions, a staffing firm, agrees that there is a gap between experienced workers within the IT industry. “There’s a void in the market because we have the people with 2+ years of experience compared to the people with 15+ years of experience who survived the downturn of the market, and who will retire in the next 15-20 years,” he said.

While filling jobs with qualified candidates is challenging, the report also highlighted three in-demand areas of IT. “Despite economic uncertainty and a more competitive job market, there are still talent shortages in certain IT specialties, such as applications development, web development and network administration,” said Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology.

Despite the decline in the general employment market, it’s encouraging to know that employment within the IT field is improving and that there are jobs waiting to be filled.

Happy hunting!
