It can also be demanded by the educational institute you apply to for further studies. But more often than not, reference letters are required as a proof of your abilities and talents when you apply to a new job. It is important in such a scenario that the person writing the letter is objective in his analysis of the person he is writing about regardless of the relationship he shares with the person on a personal level.
