Reference Letter for Employment

 By Tulika Nair

There are many different types of letters of recommendation. Reference letters can be written as a character validation certificate. It can also be demanded by the educational institute you apply to for further studies. But more often than not, reference letters are required as a proof of your abilities and talents when you apply to a new job. It is important in such a scenario that the person writing the letter is objective in his analysis of the person he is writing about regardless of the relationship he shares with the person on a personal level. The letter should be clear and concise and grammatically correct. It is also of extreme importance that the correct referral letter format is kept in mind while writing a reference letter for employment. A well formatted letter ensures that your impression on the addressee is good and he takes the candidate more seriously.

In order to understand how to write a letter of recommendation, it is important to keep certain tips in mind. Before you go ahead and draft the letter, find out everything that you can about the letter at hand and make a list of those qualities that the person will need to do the job. Be well informed about the qualities and capabilities of the person you are recommending. It is important that you are aware of his proficiency levels in different areas. Rather than addressing the letter as To whomsoever it may Concern, it may be a good idea to find out whom you need to address the letter to. Alternatively you can start it with an appropriate salutation. The best way to understand how to draft a reference letter for jobs employment would be to refer to a format of the same. This will explain to you how to write a reference letter for employment.

Reference Letter for Employment Template

While many people suggest using a sample reference letter for jobs  employment as a guideline while letter writing, it may be a good idea to resist the temptation to refer to use a referral letter example as then one tends to just replace the necessary details while using the same text. It is always a good idea to write an employment recommendation letter yourself to ensure that the letter seems genuine. This will always have a good impression on the addressee of the letter.

Your Name
Your Designation
Your Address

Date:

Sub:

Salutation/Greetings

Dear Ms./Mr. (addressee), or To whom it may concern

In the introductory paragraph of the letter, always introduce yourself to the addressee and explain how you are familiar with the person you are writing a letter of recommendation for. This is very important as this serves to inform the addressee about your relationship with the person you are writing the letter for. If you are a former colleague, then mention the same. It is also important that you make it clear, that the letter has been drafted keeping in mind your observation of the person you are recommending over the time period that you have been familiar with him.

It is in the second paragraph of the letter that you will list all those qualities and capabilities of the person you are recommending that according to you make him the perfect candidate for the job. It is important that you mention his proficiencies in different areas and his qualifications. Mention his skills as a team player. This is important while writing a recommendation as this is a quality most people look out for.

In case you decide to add a third paragraph it is important that you mention how the qualities the person possesses will match the job profile of the position. This paragraph summarizes the letter and should generally start with the phrase, I highly recommend. At the end of the letter, it is important that you give out your contact details so that the addressee can contact you in case he or she needs any clarification.

Valediction/Goodbye
Yours sincerely,
(Your name)

While most people tend to consider letter writing to be an arduous task, as long as you are aware of the correct format it is child's play. A reference letter for employment is the same. With the proper format and all the important details in place, a well drafted letter of recommendation will surely have a huge impact on getting the person you are recommending the job he wants.

Must My Employer Give a Reference, and Can it be Negative?

 By Ben Letham

This is a common question, and is often a source of much debate. In most cases your employer will willingly give you a reference, but they are not compelled to do so. Your employer is also within their rights to include negative content in your reference, as long as this material is true and is not discriminatory.

For instance, if you have left your place of work as the result of an employment dispute, your boss can’t use your reference as a way of criticizing you and bringing your reputation into disrepute with your new employer. If this happens, you could have grounds for defamation.

You may also find that it is your company’s policy to only give a brief reference that just details the length of your employment and your attendance record. More businesses are not including more personal information about their ex-employees to avoid any potential for unfair dismissal claims.

In addition, your reference could be given verbally. Many companies give a basic written reference and then a more detailed reference if they are called by your potential employer to give an opinion of the work you did for them. As with written references, your previous employer could give you a negative verbal reference, as long as what they say is true. If they do not give a true and accurate verbal reference, you could have grounds for slander under defamation legislation. Of course, gaining knowledge or access to this potential defamation is another matter.

If your ex-employer does provide your new employer with a reference, this will be defined as confidential. The Data Protection Act 1998 comes into play as the Act covers how confidential information - such as your reference that might contain sensitive personal information - can be distributed. If you think your confidential reference has negative content, you may not be able to obtain a copy of your reference because of the Data Protection Act.

The Data Commissioner’s Office recommends to employers: ‘In most circumstances, you should provide the information in a reference, or at least a substantial part of it, to the person it is about if they ask for it. Even if the referee refuses consent, this will not necessarily justify withholding the information, particularly where this has had a significant impact on the individual, such as preventing them from taking up a provisional job offer.’

If you have had trouble getting a new job, and you believe it may be because of your employer’s reference, it may well be worth speaking to a solicitor to clarify your situation.

Find The Perfect Job In No Time

 By Anthony Onaf

It’s about who you know, NOT what you know! But, what if you don't know anyone? Then what are you suppose to do? You suppose to go hunting and make contacts. When finding any job the first rule is to make looking for a job your JOB!

Finding a Job Is Your Job

If you are unemployed then you should put aside at least 6-8 hours of each business day for applying to jobs, making contacts, interviewing, and staying on top of your industry. This strategy will always award you a job in less time. Your goal should be to apply to a minimum of 3 jobs per day. You should manage a list of contacts of everyone you directly or indirectly make contact with.

If you already have a job, then you shouldn't be looking for a job. But, if it is imperative that you find a new job, then it will be more difficult to find the adequate time to job hunt, therefore you should put aside the time for your job search as it becomes available.

Analyze Your Craft

You should know your craft. Know the skill you hold and the level at which you best perform. Rate yourself fairly, do not underrate your talent. Know your worth, but better know the least (salary) you are willing to accept.

It is important to know your skill set. Knowing this information will help you better asses the position which you are seeking. Getting a job isn't only about the employer finding the perfect fit, it is also for you to find the perfect fit. Research the salary for your position, such as Salary.com, SalaryExpert.com, and PayScale.com. Once you are familiar with the salary you should stay at least $5,000 within that range (e.g. if the salary for the job is expected to be $45,000 then you should seek opportunity within the range of $40,000-$45,000 or $45,000-$50,000, depending on your level of skill for the position).

Prepare Your Resume

You should update your current resume or create a new resume. Your original resume should be generic, but keyword-rich. The generic version should NOT contain any formal greets to any particular party. Basically, you should be able to apply to any job with the generic version without any editing. It should be readily available for fast access and quick apply. The generic version will be used to post on job boards, for employers to view when searching the database. Editing your resume for formal greets should be done at the time of applying to a job.

You want your resume to be keyword-rich because when employers/recruiters search databases for resumes they usually use keywords to find employees. If your resume has the proper keyword density and strategy then your resume is more likely to be returned within the search results (e.g. if the job you are searching for is 'customer service' then your resume should focus on the keyword 'customer service').

Many argue that a one-page resume is the best resume, but in my experience a one-page resume doesn't provide enough information for those with extensive backgrounds. In this case I suggest not exceeding 2 pages, unless the job you are applying for is information technology related or relies on extended details within the industry, then it is (sometimes) best to list or add every product, program, service, and technology which you have touched, worked with, or have knowledge of. Even still do not exceed 3 pages at this point, and that may be too much. Though, I must admit I have seen 5-page resumes which are highly detailed and keyword-rich that receive a very high response rate.

Never boast or brag on your resume. Be truthful and list your objective, skills, professional experience, education, and knowledge.

If you do not have the ability or time to create an award-winning resume then it may be worthwhile to invest in a professional resume writing service.

Build Your Contacts

The best way to make contacts is by calling the employer or recruiter directly. Usually this information is made available when applying for a job online. If you are at a job board site such as: Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, or a niche-based job board such as: DataCenterLife.com then more than likely the contact information is found on the job post page. If you are applying through an employer site then more than likely the contact information can be found under the "Contact Us" page usually found on the sites' navigational bar. Respect the wishes of employers and recruiters who state NOT to contact by phone.

You should create a contact for any job you apply for.

Manage Your Contact List

Every employer or recruiter you make contact with directly or indirectly should be added to your contact list. Your contact list should include the company name, contact name, email address, phone number, and position title. You should also have a field or method which denotes the last time you spoke with or contacted each contact. This is important so you do not make the mistake of contacting someone you spoke with days earlier as well this helps you manage your time between each contact. You should follow-up with your contacts at least once every week or every 7 business days.

Out of Work. Out of the Loop.

Just because you are unemployed doesn't mean you need to fall behind in your industry. You should still stay familiar with your industry and spend your time wisely. Study your industry market and know the new technologies being used inside your job industry. Stay afloat, use your resources such as: the internet, newspapers, media, friends, and ex co-workers to know what is going on in your job industry. If you are out of work for months and have no idea of a new application that is being used by all professionals in your industry, then it will look bad in an interview when you have no clue what they are talking about and you are claiming to be a skilled professional in the industry. Keep your eye on the prize and know your stuff. Even if you are not an expert at it, at least have the basic knowledge.

Don't Answer That Phone

You only have one chance at making a good impression, do not blow it! Do not answer the phone if you are too busy to talk, if you see a number that you do not recognize assume it is an employer or recruiter and you should not answer the call, if you are too busy. There is nothing worse than a crying baby in the background, a large bulldozer from a nearby construction site, the sound of a flushing toilet, a third-party conversation going on in the background, or being in a drop-call zone when an employer or recruiter calls. You should be focused, relaxed, calmed, and ready to answer all questions swiftly without any interruptions when the phone rings, otherwise allow your voice mail service to get the call and return the call later when the time is more convenient.

Give Yourself a Break

I also suggest taking off Friday, don't do any job hunting or interviewing this day, enjoy yourself. Have yourself a 3-day weekend. The only reason you should schedule Friday for interviewing is if the employer or recruiter schedule it, never inconvenience your interviewer unless it is life-threatening or extremely important. Also, you should still answer your phone on Friday when you have the time, if you are too busy or unable to answer your phone then make sure you have a voice mail service set up.

Interviewing

Getting an interview is what you worked hard for. Having a successful interview is just as important as getting the job. This determines everything. Preparation for your interview should begin the minute you are scheduled for your interview. You should study the background of the company. You should be familiar with what the company does and their procedures. Most of this information is usually found on the company's website (sometimes buried within the site so you may have to do some digging). You should prepare questions which you may have for the interviewer about the company and/or position. You should familiarize or refresh yourself with the requirements/qualifications of the position. And most importantly you should have a good night sleep before the interview, at least 8-10 hours of rest.

You should have at least 2 business suits/attire for interviewing. If you have a second interview you should have the ability to switch to a different suit. Your suits should be only of the three colors: black, navy, or gray. Make sure you are well groomed for the interview.

You should arrive to the interview between 10-15 minutes early. You should never come to an interview empty handed. You should at least have a business folder with notepad paper, a writing pen, and a hardcopy of your resume.

When interviewing you should relax and be yourself. You should be focus, articulate well, and be keen. Make non-offensive eye contact with your interviewer. Ask questions about the company and the position. Ask the interviewer about their position and the length of time they been with the company. Ask the interviewer why the position is available and why did the last person leave the company? Ask the interviewer how soon do they hope to fill the available position? Ask the interviewer for a business card or way to contact them if you have any questions later.

Just remember to be yourself and remember that the interviewer is only human just like you. If you don't get the job then try and try again, until you get a job. Many times an interview is a display of your personality and character. If you have truthfully and appropriately represented your skill set on your resume, then the interviewer already know you are capable of handling the job.

Wal-Mart Online Employment Application - How To

 By Barb Thornback

One of the largest employers in the US is Wal-Mart, therefore if you are thinking about a job with them you need to know how to correctly fill out an online application form.

If you are looking for a managerial position with Wal-Mart, do not use the online application method. Instead you will find a different address to send your CV to. You will need access to a computer for the online application. If you do not have access to a computer, you can fill in a paper application form that can be found at your local library.

Begin by visiting Wal-Mart Career website. Then before applying you need to read the legal disclaimers and information reminders, so you are aware of the information that you need to supply. It is very important that you take the time to read each part of the application and disclaimers thoroughly so you know to submit any past history that is required.

The next step after reading the Wal-Mart online application disclaimers is to create a user name and password. Then fill in the application with where you want to work, the stores and job positions that you are most interested in. You will be required to fill in your personal information, such as your address and telephone numbers, your availabililty and you will need to provide at least two references.

The Wal-Mart job application form then requires information on your education and job experience, which is pretty standard with all online application forms. Be sure to write the information correctly and double check that all the dates match up for previous positions. When stating the reasons for leaving a previous job try to be diplomatic and don't put anything about personality clashes, because you don't want to give the impression that you are hard to get on with.

Most of the online application is similar to other application forms, but you still need to make sure that it is written out correctly and there are no spelling mistakes and you have given honest answers. Being honest on the application will get you a lot further than being dishonest and then getting found out.

Don't rush the online application, take your time, you will need about 30 minutes to fill it out. There will be additional questions apart from your employment history before you submit the application. Fill everything out as accurately as possible and read over the application at least twice to make sure that all is correct and is written in a way to please the employer.

Finally, if you do not hear anything about your application, it might be worthwhile chasing it up, but make sure you leave it for an acceptable amount of time.

employment:Shine in Your Job Application

By Mary Shad Moss

We can’t help but deal with present-day realities like recession, job lay-offs, and the increasing number of baby boomers about to face retirement. All of these have caused fierce competition for jobs among the nation's unemployed, with a roomful of people applying for the same position you’ve been eying. But don’t be daunted by these facts. Remember, you have only one opportunity to impress an employer, so keep some of these tips in mind to help your application shine and get noticed during your job application!

1. Get Info on the Position and Company.

Before you apply for any job position, you must be fully aware of the company and the description of the job you want to apply for. It’s an advantage to know the position's background to determine if your skills and interests match what the company is looking for from its applicants.

Take time to do research. A company’s background is usually available in their website. Furthermore, companies have their own system of accommodating job applications. You may either check their websites or call the office to know what you need to do to send them your resume or application materials.

2. Prepare your portfolio

The ideal way to write your resume is to make it short and concise. All you need is an accurate description of your skills, work experience, abilities, career objectives, and contact information.

You might also need a formal cover letter to go with your resume to make your application more professional. A well-tailored resume coupled with a first-rate cover letter can get instant recognition that can help you land the job.

3. Dress to Impress

Whether you’re scheduled for an interview or just submitting your resume to the company, be sure you look presentable. The line "dress for success" might be overused, but it still remains true when it comes to job hunting. And since you’re "selling" yourself in job hunting, you need to look your best to get noticed.

The safest route is to dress conservatively and wear comfortable clothes. It’s ideal for men and women to wear a solid colored suit (women should match it with a skirt). Also remember to polish your shoes, trim your nails, and have a professional and neat hairstyle. This will help you get noticed. Once you feel great and comfortable with your clothes and yourself, you will exude enough confidence that's sure to impress your potential employer.

4. Thank you notes

After your interview, make sure to send a short note to thank-you note to whomever accommodated you during your job application. Sending a simple handwritten or electronic note will surely show your politeness and courtesy, and will definitely make you stand out among the crowd of applicants.

employment:Job Applications for 15 Year Olds

 By Charlie S

In the United States of America, many teenagers work in various industries and at a very early stage in their lives turn financially independent, along with continuing their education. This experience is very useful while we apply for professional courses like engineering and management after high school. However, it's a common experience that innumerable job aspirants lose out on good and highly coveted job opportunities, due to improper and incorrect way of filling the job application.

The first thing to do before applying for a job is to conduct a detailed research on the reputation and past history of the company, where you are applying for a job. Look for the qualities which the employer is looking for before you apply for any post. Include all things which have been asked by the employer in your application.

15 year olds can apply for jobs such as assistants in hotels, garages or work in product making companies or else do creative jobs like gardening. Household jobs like cleaning, cooking, taking care of pets can be done well by 15 year olds. Since this is the computer age, computer and Internet savvy guys and girls can do jobs like freelance writing and data entry. You can get many jobs as a typist, if you are good at typing. There are many part time jobs for 15 and 16 year olds which one can do in order to get some experience. You can consult the senior people in your family, to find out about the different jobs for teens, which you could apply for. In the next few paragraphs, let us discuss the right method of job application writing.

Importance of Obtaining Working Papers

Applying for jobs for fifteen year olds can become difficult because of certain rules and regulations laid down by the government. However, if you follow all the instructions systematically, you will be able to secure a job for yourself. You will be required to get relevant work papers, if you wish to apply for a job as a fifteen year old. This condition of working papers is prevalent in a few states. These working papers can be sought from the department of labor. While you apply for the working papers, you will need a fitness certificate of a fitness test, conducted in the recent one year from your personal doctor.

The application form for working papers will contain details such as your personal information like name, age, record of conduct, school record and identity card. You should take your parents along and take their signature (if required) on the application form. In case you have lost your working papers, you can apply for a copy of the work papers from the same office where you got it.

Preparing Your Resume

All employers expect that the candidates applying for a job should submit a correctly written resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV). Resume writing is a skill which you need to acquire. Your name, address, contact details, educational qualifications, previous experience (if any), and hobbies and special interests constitute a well written resume. You should provide all true and complete details, after studying the requirements of the employers. Faking about your abilities can create serious troubles for you - the job application can get rejected if found untrue or you will face problems while actually working, as your employer would expect you to meet certain set standards. If you have the skills which the employer is looking for, then do mention them under 'special abilities' in your resume. Your resume should be fit and relevant for the jobs that you are applying for. You can read more on resume writing tips.

When it comes to giving references, you can give reference of a person whom you know since a considerable time - like your school teacher, your previous company supervisor or your exam trainer. The formatting of your resume should be proper and must not confuse the reader, as this can pose a bad impression. Have proper headers and footers, and use bold formatting type only for heads and sub-heads. As your qualifications increase, keep on updating your resume and always have a copy of the latest updated resume with you. Present the resume in a professional way by following instructions given by the employer.

Preparing a Cover Letter

The cover letter contents should be precise, to-the-point and well written. Begin writing the cover letter by writing about yourself and also the employer details. Do not forget to mention the date on the cover page. Start writing the letter which is addressed to the employer by having a proper salutation followed by the subject of application. In the first paragraph, write about the position you are applying for and your interest in the job. Then, write about your skills, qualifications and experience related to the job in the successive paragraphs. End the letter properly and sign it. Use good quality A4 size paper as the cover letter and avoid making any sorts of mistakes.

Have a Final Check

Proofreading is very vital which should be done not only by you but also by someone else. In the final check, ensure that your application is professionally presentable and as per the industry standards. See to it that you have implemented all the suggestions of the employer, as failing to do so suggests that you have weak understanding power.

Online job applications for 15 year olds are very easy for them to apply, to get their desired post in good companies. You can e-mail your resume to your employer or fill in all the details on the employer's website, if such provisions are available. Due to the growing number of applications for jobs, online job applications for 15 year olds have become the need of the time. Indeed, the success of your job search depends on a well presented job application.

A Layoff Can Be a Chance to Reinvent Your Career

By Tamara Dowling, CPRW

Have you just been laid off or fired? What do you do in place of that 40, 50 or more hours a week you spent at work? How are you coping without the daily human interaction? Even more importantly, what you are going to do next?
It's tough to stay focused and motivated. Let's go step by step and soon your be on your way to a successful new career.
Step One: Acknowledge Your Feelings
At first you can't believe it has happened to you. Some feel a sense of shock. You may spend time trying to figure out why this happened. Maybe you feel angry and betrayed. All these feelings are normal. However, if you are having difficulty coping with the situation you may want to talk with a professional counselor. Talking about your emotions, and even recording your feelings in a journal can help. Don't hesitate to receive support from friends, family and trained counselors.
Step Two: Quick Financial Review
First you must get the obvious out of the way. Sit down and review your finances. How long can you afford to be unemployed? How much money do you require monthly? How much have you put aside for a time like this? Once you know this, you can begin to make your short and long term plans.
Step Three: A Chance to Reengineer Your Career
Were you happy in your prior position? Is it time for a whole new career? This is your chance to reinvent yourself and select a career that you enjoy. Explore every idea, no matter how impossible it seems. Some people find ways to incorporate their hobbies into a new career. After reflection you may discover you'd rather accept a lower salary for more stability. Defining your values will help you define your career goals. When your values are incongruent with your work, it is difficult to be satisfied.
Check out SeekingSuccess.com's Career Discovery Tools for some simple self discovery exercises. Certified career coaches are trained professionals to counsel you through a career transition. Check your local yellow page directory to find one near you.
Step Four: Interim Plan
If you are choosing a new career, you may need more time than you can afford. It's okay to take time to get your career on track, but you've got to pay the bills. Here are some things you may do. See if any of these are right for your situation.
Temporary Assignments
Some professions are better suited for this than others. For example, accountants, administrative assistants or nurses can easily fit into this type of workstyle. They can "test" different types of employers and make new contacts.

Consulting Assignments
If you are an experienced professional, this may be a good way to bring home some money, meet new contacts, add to your résumé and try a new workstyle. An easy way to get started is to support an established firm needing additional consultants. Otherwise, you'll need to market yourself through your network, a recruiter, and Web sites such as guru.com.

Seasonal Work
The timing may be right for some positions. Between October and January, retail sales is a perfect temporary job. You'll meet many people and brush-up on your selling skills. Qualified tax professionals can pick up hours during tax season. During school months, some school districts will issue emergency teaching certificates for certain individuals to fill substitute teacher positions.

Freelance Writing
Writing articles for professional journals, magazines and Web sites is another way to earn some money and try a new workstyle. You may discover a new talent that turns into your next career.

The bottom line is, you must be realistic about your financial needs and plan for them.
Step Five: Building New Skills
When you were working 50 hours a week, there was little time for continuing education, association chapter meetings, seminars or research. Now is your chance. Here are some of the things you can do. These activities are not just for skill building. They add depth and balance to your life during this transition.
  1. Learn how to operate a new software application.
  2. Read the latest business books.
  3. Take a course at your local university
  4. Volunteer at a charity or school
  5. Become more active in a professional association
  6. Write an article, book or screenplay
  7. Complete research and publish your findings
  8. Teach a class or workshop at a high school, community college or university
  9. Get involved in a political organization you believe in.
  10. Learn a foreign language

For more tips on selecting courses and workshops to boost your career, click here to read the article, "New Skills Lead to a New Job." Your life can be rewarding. Be optimistic about your future. Look at your layoff as a chance to take a break and learn about yourself. Arm yourself with new skills, more knowledge and step into your dream job.

New Skills Lead to a New Job

By Tamara Dowling, CPRW

Do you want to get ahead in your career? It is important to develop new skills and expand your knowledge. That may be what distinguishes you from your peers when up for a promotion.
What types of training and educational courses are available to me?
  1. Self study courses offered through an industry association. Many of these lead to a certificate or designation and are recognized within the industry.
  2. Continuing education courses offered at a Community College or University. The courses may count toward a degree. If you currently hold a special designation in your industry, check to see if the course counts as Continuing Education Units (CEU). You may obtain a course catalog online, or by calling the adult education or continuing education admissions office.
  3. Videotape or audiotape courses. These courses are very convenient and affordable and can be good for building soft skills.
  4. Online courses/distance learning. A wide variety of courses are now offered online, at a wide variety of expense. Courses leading toward a certification or Continuing Education Units (CEU) have more weight than those without course end evaluation.
  5. One day seminars or workshops. These can be good for refreshing management or organization skills.
How do I choose the right subject to study?
If you're going to make a time and financial commitment, you want to be sure you choose a course that will give your career the biggest boost. If you are not sure, talk to your manager. Ask in which areas you need development. Use that as a guide. You may even ask her for a recommendation to a workshop or course.
What if I can't afford to pay for a course?
Check with the institution to see if they have any discount programs or scholarships. Your next step is to ask your manager if your company would sponsor you for all or a portion of the cost.
How do I ask my company to pay for my course?
  1. Gather information about the course. Make copies of the course description, professor biography, and description of the program or institution.
  2. Write a short 1-2 paragraph summary about how this course will improve your performance at work.
  3. If possible, include a very brief endorsement from someone who took the course.
  4. Offer to present a summary of the course to your fellow team members, after you've completed the course.
  5. If your company has a standard procedure for such requests, follow those instructions.
  6. Most companies will pay for materials upfront, and will reimburse you for course fees upon successful completion of the course. Make sure you collect all documentation they require.
  7. If the company agrees to pay, don't forget to send a memo to your manager when you complete the course. Explain what you learned and how it has helped you in your position. Remember to thank your manager for sponsoring you.
Getting the most out of the course
  1. Attend the classes, and do the required assignments.
  2. Take notes. Read your notes from the last class before the next class. Hearing the discussion, writing the notes, and reading the notes reinforces the information in your mind.
  3. Take advantage of any resources offered such as articles, books, field trips or Web sites.
  4. Get to know your professor. They may be able to help you on a more personal level, and suggest additional study methods and resources.
  5. Participate in the class. The more involved in the discussion, the more stimulated and inspired you'll be.
  6. Meet your classmates. This is an excellent networking opportunity.
Ongoing education shows your current and prospective employers that you are serious about your career. You'll have new knowledge, skills, and insight into your career. You'll never be bored if you are continuing to grow and try new things.

Resignation Advice

By Tamara Dowling, CPRW

Congratulations! You were just hired for your dream job. It is time to leave your current not-so-dreamy job and boss behind you.
Before you gloat to all of your peers and tell your boss to "kiss off," read these quick tips on managing a professional resignation. Handle your resignation professionally and later you will be thankful that you did.
  1. Think about how much notice you should give. On average, people give 2-4 weeks depending on their level of responsibility.
  2. Look at your pending projects, upcoming meetings and deadlines. Create a brief plan how you'll wrap things up during your final weeks.
  3. Prepare your resignation letter. State that you are "resigning effective month/day/year in order to take another position." Avoid including anything more about the new opportunity in the letter. Definitely exclude any negative comments about your current job, or why you are leaving. Your letter will be placed in your employee file, and may be read by managers or board members. It is in your best interest to leave a favorable impression on those influential people.
  4. Do not tell your co-workers or anyone about your resignation until you inform your Manager.
  5. Always resign in person. When you meet with your Manager hand him or her a copy of the letter after you have shared the news. Be calm and respectful. Do not mention any negative reasons, even if asked. You may describe the new position, but do not brag. And, do not feel obligated to share your salary. If asked, say, "I would rather not share that."
  6. Be prepared to leave immediately, if asked. Some companies have a policy to let an employee go immediately upon resignation. Do not take it personally.
  7. Once you give notice, people will assume that you are not working as hard as you did before. You will need to work even harder to prove you are not slacking off. Continue to arrive on time or early, and put in a full day's work.
  8. Before you leave, document your personal 'desk level' procedures and the status of your pending projects. If you have a staff, obtain a 30-day plan from each staff member. Or, create one for or with them. Submit these documents to your Manager. Chances are your company won't have your replacement right away. These plans will make it so much easier for your Manager to oversee your staff after you are gone.
  9. Never say, "I'll never work in this place again." You may be back someday at this company or a partner of this company. By making those statements, even if in private, you cut off your options for the future.
  10. Avoid gossip groups. Now that you have resigned, every malcontent in the office will be at your desk to get the details. Do not be pulled into the negativity.
  11. When your employer conducts an exit interview, stay positive. Avoid all temptations to tell all the bad things about your boss and the company. It will bring no good to you, only harm. And it is unlikely to bring positive change to the employer. You are leaving, so focus on your reputation and future.
  12. Lastly, be appreciative. No matter how much you hated the job, you learned many things and probably met many valuable contacts. Express your appreciation to your Manager, your staff and those with whom you worked closely.
You may work at a company 5, 10 or 20 years. But many times you will be remembered for how you left rather than the content of those years.

What To Do Next, When You Don't Get The Promotion

By Tamara Dowling, CPRW

It really stings your ego when you're passed by for a promotion. You are dedicated and talented, why did the promotion you sought go to someone else? What is next for you? It's easy to feel like your future is dim. Think again, we'll help get you back on the road to success.
Let's examine the situation. Did you comply with the company procedures? Most companies post a position, and employees interested must submit an application by a certain date. If you didn't follow the rules, it may have cost you the job. Next time work within the framework.
If the position was not posted, was your manager aware of your aspiration? It is smart to share your goal with your manager. Not only will she keep you in mind for future opportunities, but a good manager will also groom you to get there.
Take time to review the job requirements again. Compare them with your qualifications. Are you really ready for this promotion? Are there development opportunities for you?
Don't be bitter toward the person who was promoted, and don't speak ill of them. Instead reach out to them, especially if they are your new manager. We must assume they were doing something right to gain the promotion. It is worth your time to get to know this person; you'll probably learn something.
What if the person who got the promotion has less experience than you, and less education? That happens. Look deeper than the years of experience. Examine your soft skills. Things like the ability to motivate people, decision making skills, and negotiation acumen count for a lot.
Management also looks at the accomplishment within those years, and you should too. To give a promotion based solely on tenure, and ignore merit, would undermine employee development. It is difficult to take a look at ourselves and see what we need to improve. Don't get caught up in looking for faults in the person who got the promotion. How does that help you?
After you've examined yourself and you've put any anger or resentment behind you, schedule a meeting with your manager. The purpose is twofold. The first is to tell your manager about your commitment to your goals. The second is to find out what she feels your weaknesses are.
Ask your manager specific questions like:
  • "What can I do to prepare myself for the next opportunity?"
  • "Do you feel I am suited for this type of position?"
  • If not, "Why not?"
  • "What career path do you think I am suited for?"
  • "What should I work to improve?"

Ask for more challenging assignments in your current role to prepare you for future roles. Volunteer for task force committees or other projects. End the meeting by committing to designing your personal development plan. Ask if she would be willing to review it to be sure you are on the right track.
After you meeting, keep in touch. Without bragging, sharing your achievements with your manager. Don't assume your boss will notice, and remember.
Your career is your responsibility. The company's responsibility is to make money for the owners or shareholders. Don't leave the management of your career to someone else. Take charge and be ready for that next promotion.

Take Charge of Your Professional Goals

By Tamara Dowling, CPRW

Many companies are aware of how important it is to provide ongoing training and development to employees. However, not all companies have the resources to create an extensive program for all employees.
Ultimately it is up to each of us to take charge of our professional and personal growth. We can help you with a personal growth plan.
Mentor
If your company does not have a formal mentoring program, look to your local professional associations. Get to know others in your industry or profession. Identify someone who would be willing to advise and counsel you. Select a mentor at the appropriate level. If you are an entry-level worker, you may want to recruit a manager rather than a Vice President.
Set perimeters at the beginning. Be respectful of your mentor's time. Perhaps establish a monthly meeting time with an agenda. Be prepared for your meeting, and don't keep your mentor beyond the committed hour.
Even if your mentor is a high earner and you are not, don't expect the mentor to pick up tabs for lunch or dinner. Take turns, go 'dutch', or if you can afford it treat your mentor in return for his/her time.
Role Models
Within your company, you can probably identify co-workers who are successful. Do you ever wonder how they achieve success? It is a good idea to get to know them. Talk with them and learn how you can succeed. Achievers are usually happy to give you a few tips. It also helps to observe them in action.
Of course, there are always the negative models that demonstrate the behavior to avoid.
Skill Coach
A skill coach is different from a mentor. A mentor relationship is ongoing. A skill coach is someone who has expertise in a particular area.
Perhaps you are having trouble with PowerPoint presentations. Your manager is not pleased with your most recent presentation slides, but she does not pinpoint how you can improve.
You know that Maria in Sales is always praised for her presentation slides and handouts. Why not ask Maria to coach you, and in turn you take her to her favorite lunch spot. Maybe in the future Maria will need your help.
Training and Self Study
There are many training opportunities. Go to a search engine to find specific vendors in the categories we discuss below.
  1. Study Business and Trade Magazines/Websites

Subscribe to at least one general business magazine and one trade or industry publication, online or offline.

Keep up with your reading. Bring them to meetings or appointments, so you can read an article or two while you wait.

Each month, choose one or two exceptional articles or blogs to share with your department and your manager. They'll appreciate it even more if you highlight the key points for them in an email or quick chat.

  2. Read Books

Make a commitment and keep it to read at least one new business or industry related book. Ask your manager if you can make a 5 minute presentation at your team meeting, or distribute a one page summary to the team.

  3. Take Online Courses

There are dozens of online or distance learning opportunities. Courses range from soft skills to technical skills. Some are free, and many are quite affordable. There are hundreds of resources with free webinars or podcasts.

Some courses are more structured and others allow one to complete it at one's convenience, within a certain period of time. These weekly assignments and weekly discussion topics will have an immediate impact on your career.

  4. Never Stop Learning

Consult local community colleges and universities for continuing education courses. Most of these institutions publish online catalogs of courses in a variety of subjects, including ones that lead to professional designations and certifications.

Also, check with your professional associations for self-study courses. Often the successful completion of a course series qualifies you for certain industry certification by the association or sponsor.

Research training institutions and trade schools. Many people prefer to get computer skills training in this type of environment.

Be Active in Your Professional Associations
With a good professional association, you'll benefit in the following ways:
  • Network community
  • Local meetings -- some with educational speakers
  • Annual conference to learn about industry issues and trends
  • Opportunities to participate in discussion panels and advisory boards
  • Newsletters or Web sites with current industry news
  • Training courses and professional certificates and programs
  • Opportunity to volunteer your time and expertise
  • Venue to submit articles for publication in newsletter, trade magazine or Web site
Volunteer
  • Volunteering helps others, and helps you in many ways. It demonstrates your commitment to your industry and community. It also allows you to broaden your network community, and experience.
  • Volunteer on an improvement team or task force -- at your company, your association or for a non-profit organization.
  • Volunteer as a guest speaker or panelist at a local High School, Trade School, Prison, Religious Group, or Community College.
  • Volunteer your expertise for local charities or schools.
  • Offer a class or workshop in your community. Check with your local school district, county recreation department or non-profit organizations. Make sure you have a clear plan, and are able to deliver an effective class before you offer your services.
  • Be a mentor for someone else who can benefit from your experience.
Work With Your Manager
Once you have a first draft plan for your professional development, meet with your manager. Share your goals and the skills you are developing. Ask for her feedback. What skills does she feel you should concentrate on?
Your manager will be impressed with your initiative. Keep your manager informed of your progress and achievements.
If the company does not pay for any of your training or association fees, understand that it may be a budget issue. If they do it for one, they may have to open it up for all. That could be more than they can afford.
Don't be discouraged if your manager does not participate in your plan. Your manager has limited time, and multiple responsibilities. Stay committed to your plan; your success goes well beyond your current job. You are building a career and a life.

Fire-Proof Career Tactics

By Tamara Dowling, CPRW

We've heard it before, "Things have changed. Job security no longer exists." Have we modified our work philosophy to meet this challenge? What can we do to not only survive but prevail in this environment?
We can change the way we look at our relationships with our employers and how we define ourselves. We must realize that we are in control of our career. Consider ourselves independent contractors, and our employer is our biggest client. How does that feel?
With this mentality we know we must take care of our chief customer, and we know we must continuously improve ourselves so we are competitive in the market. Listen to how workers with the new attitude sound.
Taking care of our chief customer...our employer
We are reliable. We're at work everyday. We get our work done on or before deadlines.
We look good. We dress professionally and are meticulously groomed. Our employer is proud to present us to new clients and guests.
We are great communicators. We are accurate, persuasive, energetic, and concise writers and speakers.
We're open minded. We're ready to listen to others ideas and techniques. We're flexible enough to change our minds.
We follow instructions. We work within the company policies and procedures. We act with honesty and integrity.
We leave our personal problems at home. When we are at work, we are 100% focused on our company's goals.
We are cooperative. We never say, "That's not my job."
We solve problems. Rather than bringing problems to our manager's door, we solve problems for our managers.
We can take criticism. We solicit feedback and appreciate criticism because it is a great way to learn how we can improve.
We're excellent planners. We use documentation and measurement to plan and process work.
Taking care of our personal business...our career
We understand our market. We keep up with industry trends so we plan to be where it is heading, not where it has been. We learn about tangential industries should opportunities in our immediate industry dry up.
We are life-long learners. We are always expanding our knowledge and our skill base. We are familiar with the latest Web sites regarding business, our industry and ancillary industries. We are fluent with the latest software and take advantage of the latest technologies.
We build and maintain a powerful network. We belong to associations and after-work groups. We stay connected and are continuously broadening our network. We support our peers.
Are our ready to adopt the new work philosophy? If you do, you'll become indispensable to your current employer and extremely valuable in the market place.
